I Am Crazy Lucky!

April 10, 2014 by Alan Underkofler

Or to be more accurate I am crazy and I am lucky!  I know for sure I am lucky as I put my name in for the #PCTDirtyDozen and was selected to carry a Gregory pack.  I was very excited to be part of this group but it did create a bit of a dilemma for me on a few fronts. If you have been following my writings you may recall my decision just two weeks ago to change my pack to the Osprey Exos 58 from ...

In Jail, Fined $2,000, Cavity Searched!

April 7, 2014 by Alan Underkofler

All possible after entering Mexico without your US passport.  I have to say I was hesitant to make the trip yet determined to take care of a few things before I start the Pacific Crest Trail.  Some of you know my passport was stolen along with many other valuable things a few weeks ago.  And while this is all in the process of being replaced I still needed to make this trip to Mexico. I decided ...

Resupply Strategy Chaos

April 6, 2014 by Alan Underkofler

I am committed and pretty much have to review my resupply strategy today! I've been putting this off for a few weeks as this is one of the not so fun parts of the planning experience for me. Where to ship, where to buy, how to ship... USPS Priority Flat Rate, Regional Flat, or UPS... Type of box because each option has a different box. Ship to Post Office, local store, or local trail angel? And ...

Packing, Boxes, and Movers!

March 31, 2014 by Alan Underkofler

The last 48 hours have been a whirlwind of packing, moving pile navigation, and movers. The best line of the day was when one of the movers told the other... "No of course he is not walking to Canada! That's just crazy" I now have plenty of room to finish the resupply boxes, confirm all addresses, and create a mailing list for the friends handling my resupplies. Life is good! 15 days until ...

My New Passport Is In Process!

March 28, 2014 by Alan Underkofler

In about one hour I had the forms filled out, new pictures done, everything signed, and $152.25 paid for my new passport.  I was told it is their “busy season” and should not expect it for at least six weeks.  I have arranged for someone to check my mail every few weeks and let me know when it arrives.  I will then have the passport added to one of my resupply boxes… No worries! On a positive note ...

I Am One Happy Nomad!

March 28, 2014 by Alan Underkofler

If you read my post from yesterday I Have Been Robbed! you would know about the loss of my Pacific Crest Trail hiking permit and Canada Entry permit.  I am happy to report both should be in the mail to me today! I spoke with Jack briefly at the Pacific Crest Trail Association office yesterday and was informed that reissuing my hiking permit would not be a problem.  I received an email from Marnie ...

I Have Been Robbed!

March 27, 2014 by Alan Underkofler

Sadly I arrived home today to discover my house had been burglarized.  Happily no one was home therefore no one was harmed.  Almost all the electronics in the house were gone.  The camera I was planning to take for the PCT, memory cards, check books, and many random items of value gone.  Luckily almost all of my backpacking gear was with me and apparently my friendly thieves did not see any value ...
