Mountain Lion Encounters Near the PCT

August 18, 2014 by Alan Underkofler

I started my day taking CanCan and Bandit to Mammoth. We stopped for coffe and breakfast and then headed for donuts (2nd breakfast). I then dropped them off at their hotel to get town errands complete. I thought about seeing a movie but did not realize the theater only played day time shows on Saturday. Maybe tomorrow I will relive the movie experience again. I headed to Von's to purchase ...

Crunching To Devils Postpile National Monument

August 18, 2014 by Alan Underkofler

I woke up and ventured out to Devils Postpile National Monument. It was only a mile... How bad can a mile one trail using crutches be? It was a beautiful, slow, and somewhat painful experience. But in the end completely worth it! It was definitely time for lunch at Reds Meadows Lodge and to see which hikers had arrived. I met up with some PCT friends none of which had seen Butterfly... I ...

Goodbye Bishop! Hello Red Meadows!

August 17, 2014 by Alan Underkofler

I have spent the last four days in Bishop at the new Bishop Hostel using it as a hub to shuttle hikers to and from Independence, Lone Pine, and up to Kearsarge Pass.Today I am heading to Red Meadows near Mammoth as I need to be back in the trees! On the way to Lone Pine I stopped at Manzanar one of ten camps where Japanese Americans were forced to leave their homes and live under guard during World War II. It's shocking to realize this happened to US Citizens. Imagine being forced to leave your job, business, home, and friends because of your family heritage... I then went up to the Whitney Portal to check out the Portal Store which I ...

The Beard Must Go!

August 5, 2014 by Alan Underkofler

I started my morning at Jacks for breakfast in Bishop, CA and decided it was time to shave the beard! It seemed like a great opportunity to have a straight razor shave by a small town barber. A first time and unique experience for me. I have to say having a straight razor on your neck creates an entirely new level of trust with your barber! I then became a Bishop taxi for fellow hikers staying ...

Alone On My New Journey

August 1, 2014 by Alan Underkofler

Sadly I had to say goodbye to Butterfly again today. It was great to see and hear about all of her experiences for the last 85 miles in the Sierras. My journey is definitely different and I am trying to find all the positive parts I can. Being Butterfly's personal trail angel is definitely at the top of the list. After spending one short day together it was time for Butterfly to continue on. We ...

Pacific Crest Trail By Car Begins!

July 31, 2014 by Alan Underkofler

I have been forced off trail and given a new opportunity to experience the PCT in an entirely unexpected way.My PCT by car journey begins today! For the next six weeks I will be on crutches allowing the stress fracture in my foot to heal and embracing my new journey as I meet PCT thru-hikers on the trail for spontaneous trail magic.
